Berlin Vegan Friendly Food Guide

Last updated: May 18, 2024

Berlin makes it to the top of practically any vegan friendly city list, and it’s easy to see why. The vegan scene in Berlin continues to thrive, making it a popular international vegan destination and a plant-based dream for locals. Practically every restaurant in Berlin has at least decent vegan options, and there are plenty of fully plant-based eateries as well.

This post is broken down into three sections: Fully Vegan, Vegan & Vegetarian, and Great Vegan Options. This way you know what to expect from the menu before you visit. I only include spots that I’ve visited, so there’s definitely room for this list to grow! In fact, I typically update this post once a month because I keep learning about and trying cool plant-based eateries in this city. I’m always looking to try new plant-based eats in Berlin, so let me know what vegan-friendly spot I should try out next.

BTW — I know this post is quite long, so for shorter Berlin vegan guides, click here.

Tip: If you’re looking for a specific type of eatery you can use the search function on your computer (typically Ctrl-F or Command-F) or mobile device (For Apple: Share → Find in Page/For Android: … → Find in Page) to find them. The following are tagged:

Fully Vegan:

Li.ke: Serious Thai Vegan

Truly some of the tastiest Thai food I’ve had in Berlin, vegan or otherwise. Most of their food is done tapas style so you can easily try several of their best dishes.

Try: #6 Dim Sum, #14 Tau Hu Thod, #27 Pad Thai
Grünberger Straße 69 | Friedrichshain | #lunch #dinner #tapas #asian

Round & Edgy

Round & Edgy serves up the best cookies in Berlin, vegan or otherwise. Their classic sea salt chocolate chip is a must order for your first time visiting: the flaky sea salt perfectly brings out the rich flavors of the chocolate. In the summertime they also serve peanut butter banana and salted caramel banana pudding, which I’ve heard amazing things about. They’re inspired my NYC baking, particularly Levain and Magnolia bakeries. Better yet, everything is plant-based!

Try: Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookie

Tauentzienstraße 21-24 (KaDeWe) | Charlottenburg

Alaska Bar

Alaska Bar is one of my favorite places on this list. With a lively atmosphere and great food, you’ll want to hang here for awhile. Although I’ve only had tasty food here, I can especially recommend their Sichuan patatas bravas, almond ricotta with grissini, almond feta, and carrot lox on toast. Bring friends because you’ll want to try everything! Plates range from €4 to €13.

Try: Carrot lox, Ricotta
Reuterstraße 85 | Neukölln | #tapas #dinner

Mana Food

This fully plant-based restaurant does all the classic vegan brunch specialties quite well, including eggy tofu scrambles, carrot lox, and overnight oats. Their bagels are nice and crunchy, and they don’t skimp on the avocado! Admittedly, they can be a tad pricier than I typically like to spend on brunch, but great quality food is certainly present.

Try: Avocado Bagel
Bremer Straße 67 | Moabit | #brunch #lunch

La Petite Veganerie

Fully vegan and fully French makes La Petite Veganerie a very unique spot in the city! I give them big props for their innovation and bringing something special to Berlin’s gastronomy scene. Their dishes are a bit hit or miss, but they’re a newer spot so I’m sure they’ll continue to improve! I do have to really recommend their tartiflette, which was everything I could’ve asked for —potatoes that are crispy, creamy, and absolutely delish! I also quite liked their beef croquettes which I thought were really well done and expertly served with ribboned radish, greens, and a rich sauce. I would pass on the Beef Bourguignon and onion soup next time though. They also have dishes like crème brûlée and brie which I totally regret not trying, I’ll have to be back! I visited their brasserie location in Kreuzberg, but they also have a bistro* in Schöneberg that serves items like salads, baked goods, and quiche — all vegan too, of course!

*Temporarily closed as of May 2024

Try: Potato tartiflette, Beef croquette

Hohenstaufenstraße 64 | Schöneberg (Bistro) | #lunch #cafe

Element 5

Element 5 has a wide range of Asian tapas to choose from. They have so many amazing versions of plant-based meat; I especially enjoy their take on duck and shrimp. Be sure to order a side of rice and one of their signature sauces for more flavor and satiation. On my most recent visit I really enjoyed their seitan rice flour cone (#19) and their Korean corn dog (#9). Some of their food can be a little heavy, but it’s more bang for your buck!

Try: Peking Duck, Weisse Tigerkralle, Golden Shrimp, Dance Dance Dance, I’m Cool
Skalitzer Straße 46B | Kreuzberg | #tapas #lunch #dinner #asian

Emma Pea

Emma Pea is home to some very good mac n’ cheese. It’s creamy, topped with fried and green onions, and downright cheesy. Highly recommend! They also have quesadillas and nachos with cheese sauce on the menu, but I’ve never tried those.

Try: Mac n’ cheese
Revaler Straße 99 | Friedrichshain | #dinner #casual

Trivitys

If you enjoy plant-based cheese, Trivitys is your place, the only place in Berlin that competes is probably Alaska Bar. When visiting Trivitys, definitely get their cheese plate which comes with spreadable cheese, cream cheese, nutritional yeast, spreads, fresh salad, and homemade bread. Their waffles and raw cakes are also divine, both satiating and flavorful without being too heavy. They’re also fully gluten and added sugar free!

Try: Cheese and bread plate, Savory mushroom waffle, Shiva raw cake, Elvis raw cake
Florastraße 27 | Pankow | #brunch #lunch

Yoyo Foodworld

If you’re craving some tasty vegan junk food then Yoyo Foodworld is an excellent choice. You’ll find popular local foods like Schnitzel and Currywurst, as well as wraps, nuggets, fries, burgers, and salads. Their burgers are especially popular; they have a diverse range of options including an Alaskan lox burger, a bacon cheese burger, and a cauliflower cheese burger. The food is a little on the greasy side, but they’re a nice spot when you’re craving something more indulgent.

Try: Cheeseburger, Currywurst
Gärtnerstraße 27 | Friedrichshain | #lunch #dinner #casual #budget

CÁI

If you like spicy food, Cái is the place! They’re a Chinese vegan bistro known for their Sichuan and numbing spices. They’re spicy for Berlin standards, but if you like your food truly spicy let them know and they can deliver!

Update: On my second visit my meal wasn’t spicy at all despite being two chili peppers worthy (soooo disappointing), so I’d clarify the spice level in the future.

Try: Marinated Dan Dan noodles
Schönhauser Allee 177A | Prenzlauer Berg | #lunch #dinner #asian

Mansfield Park

Stop in for a dreamy and delicious cake at this fully vegan coffee and cake shop. If you’re looking to get a cake for a special occasion, this is a stellar spot.

Try: Pistachio Raspberry Torte
Kiautschoustraße 1 | Wedding | #dessert #bakery #cafe

1990 Vegan Living

1990 has tons of tasty options ranging from small tapas style plates to full size bowls. They’re a lovely Vietnamese spot, and my favorite full-size plate here is their Yin Yang Bowl which comes with udon noodles, tofu, seasonal vegetables, soybeans, roasted onions, and a piece of tofu covered in crispy rice flakes. The whole plate is topped with soy sauce and roasted sesame. So nourishing and yummy! Their prices have jumped quite a bit in the last year, so I’d no longer classify them as a budget spot, but their mains are just under €12, while their tapas are €5.50.

Try: Yin Yang Bowl
Krossener Straße 19 | Friedrichshain | #tapas #lunch #dinner #asian

Vincent Vegan

Vincent Vegan serves up some very tasty vegan fast food. The Great Veganski is an amazing mix of flavors and textures, while keeping the classic burger elements up to par (crispy bun, melty cheese, tasty patty, fresh vegetables) and their choice of sauce and additional ingredients like their veggie bacon makes the whole thing come together so well. The fries are also great, I tried the chili peanut onion and German gravy variations and really liked both! I thought their ‘fish’ and chips were just okay — nothing quite beats their burgers! Their locations are typically in shopping centers so the vibes are pretty casual.

Try: The Great Veganski, Chili Peanut Onion Fries
Mitte | Prenzlauer Berg | Friedrichshain | #lunch #dinner #casual

Vegano Flavors

Kebab, anyone? Vegano Flavors is home to likely the best grilled vegan meat in the city. They’re inspired by Middle Eastern and Levantine flavors, as is made clear by their wonderfully seasoned meat and equally moreish sides including hummus, falafel, seasoned vegetables, muhamara, baba ghanoush, and more. From vegan kebab to shawarma to steak, you’ll find meaty plant based dishes that are hard to find elsewhere in Berlin. Try a bit of everything and order their grill mix teller…don’t be afraid of getting an extra side or two too, their manakish and vegan cheese also look intriguing.

Try: Grill Mix Teller
Raumerstraße 6 | Prenzlauer Berg | #lunch #dinner

EasyPeasy

This women-owned brunch spot is not just vegan, it’s also fully gluten free! Their portions are very hearty and they offer a mix of savory and sweet breakfasts. You’ll find classic vegan breakfast dishes here like tofu scrambles, carrot lox on toast, and açaí bowls. You can even a few CBD drops to your meal if you fancy! They also have a few little cakes for sale, but I was only a fan of the creamy cheesecake.

Try: Carrot Lox Breakfast
Wichertstraße 33A | Prenzlauer Berg | #brunch #lunch

Försters

Försters is a pleasant sit down vegan eatery that focuses on regional, local, and seasonal cuisine. Their Schnitzel dish is a stand out item, as is their Knödeln, which are a type of boiled dumpling usually served with cooked vegetables and a creamy sauce. These dumplings are popular throughout Central and Eastern Europe, just in Germany there are quite a few regional takes. Försters’ version make for a hearty comfort meal. They also sometimes offer Käsespatzle, a type of creamy cheesy pasta dish similar to American-style mac n’ cheese. This restaurant primarily serves a mix of German, Austrian, and Italian food and offer a mix of regular dishes, as well as seasonal creations.

Try: Käsespatzle (if available)
Dunckerstraße 2a | Prenzlauer Berg | #dinner #datenight

Dat Cookie

Dat Cookie is a cookie shop specializing in soft chewy cookies. They’re the kind that could potentially be baked for longer, but I personally enjoy that chewy taste. I’d compare them to Crumbl Cookies in the US, but I actually like Dat Cookie more because I find the cookies to be much less heavy and sweet than Crumbl. Plus, they’re vegan!

Try: Apple Pie Cookie
Rosenthaler Straße 36 (Within Rosenhöfe) | Mitte | #bakery #dessert

Sen Vegan

Sen Vegan serves many classic Vietnamese dishes made vegan including rich curries topped with soy duck, salad completed with lemongrass and fried tofu, and beef pho made possible with seitan. Although there is plenty of vegan Vietnamese food in Berlin, I think they’re an agreeable spot and totally worth a visit for their expansive menu, sweet vibes, and creative takes on classic dishes. Their vegan crispy duck is tasty so I’d say go for any dish with that! Some of their plates can be ordered in smaller portions, perfect if you’re less hungry or want to save a few euros. Prices are overall quite reasonable.

Try: Curry with vegan crispy duck
Kantstraße 87 | Charlottenburg | #lunch #dinner #datenight #asian

Chay Long

Chay Long is one of my favorite Vietnamese spots in Berlin! They’ve got a lot of heart and a beautiful selection of hearty quality dishes. Their fish noodle soup is a fantastic main dish; it’s more of a rare find as far as Vietnamese plant-based dishes go, and between the fish cakes, meatballs, and noodles, I had a very filling meal. I can also recommend their chicken curry, which they totally nail. Their Hasenheide location is newer and has a very picturesque setting, complete with a faux cherry blossom tree. Two thumbs up from me!

Try: #11 Pyramid Dumpling, #22 Bún cá Hải Phòng (Fish Noodle Soup), #23 Co’m Cà Ri mit Hänchen (Chicken Curry)
Raumerstraße 17 | Prenzlauer Berg
Hasenheide 50 | Neukölln
#lunch #dinner #datenight #asian

Vöner

Vöner is the OG spot to try vegan döner in Berlin. They also offer vegan Currywurst and they’re totally worth a try if you’re craving Döner in this part of Friedrichshain.

Try: Vöner with peanut and spicy sauce
Boxhagener Str. 56 | Friedrichshain | #lunch #dinner #casual #budget

La Stella Nera

La Stella Nera is a solid place to go for plant-based Italian food in the city. I like their pizza just fine, but what I really love ordering here is their vegan tiramisu.

Try: Tiramisu
Leykestraße 18 | Neukölln | #dinner

Cafe Velicious

With freshly cut flowers on the tables and cheery service from the staff, this teensy and quaint café is a sweet spot to get your Kaffee und Kuchen on. Most, if not all, of their cakes are gluten free too.

Try: Sahne Torte, Peanut Butter Banana Chocolate Cake
Lenbachstraße 13B | Friedrichshain | #cafe #dessert #bakery

Vux

Vux is a cute local café serving specialty coffee, smoothies, cakes, bagels, sandwiches, and more. The service is also super sweet which helps make this spot one of the most charming neighborhood cafés in Berlin.

Wipperstraße 14 | Neukölln | #cafe #dessert #brunch

Soi & Co

Soi & Co is the place to visit for fanciful vegan cakes, quality matcha, and a lovely minimalist space. The way they transform these cakes out of tofu is seriously impressive! The black sesame latte I tried was nutty and delicious as well.

Try: Matcha Raspberry Pistachio Cheesecake, Black Sesame Latte
Linienstraße 205 | Mitte | #cafe #dessert #bakery #asian

Chay Umi

Fresh and filling Pan-Asian cuisine with a fully vegan menu. What’s not to like? Side note: I can’t remember too much about this restaurant past liking it so I’ll have to go back soon. I believe I tried a dish with crispy duck and it was pretty good.

Try: Duck curry
Stargarder Straße 2 | Prenzlauer Berg | #lunch #dinner #asian

Frea Bakery

This bakery is zero-waste, locally-sourced, and fully plant-based. Their food scraps are composted and turned into fertilizer that is then returned to their local suppliers. I’ve tried quite a few pastries here at this point and have become quite a fan of their consistent quality at fair prices. The Spandauer with vanilla creme is especially amazing, and their poppy seed and marzipan twist is perfect if you don’t like overly sweet pastries. Their cardamom bun and tomato tasche are also up there for me. Their house brekkie has a heftier price tag (~€20), but I found it to be a decent sharing size for two people. It includes pastries, brioche, Brötchen, butter, spreads, fresh and cooked veggies, and hummus.

Try: Spandauer, Marzipan twist, Tomato Tasche
Gartenstraße 9 | Mitte | #bakery #cafe #dessert

Frea Restaurant

Down the street from Frea Bakery is Frea Restaurant, which shares the same values as their bakery, but instead offers sit-down dinners in a modern environment. I haven’t ate at their restaurant yet, but if it’s anything like their bakery, it’s got to be good. By the looks of their menu, they seem to offer solely set menus, which are available in three, four, or five courses, with a price tag ranging from €63 to €83, with an additional fee if you’d like wine or alcohol-free drinks to pair with your courses. They offer two versions of their menu which involve their classic house courses or a menu that pertains to the current season.

Kleine Hamburger Straße 2 | Mitte | #dinner #datenight

Vamos Veganos

Although Vamos Veganos is sadly no longer serving Gemello Pizza, you should still totally visit to try their tasty vegan döner, or as it’s called here, fiöner. Their fiöner involves shaved smoked tofu, crunchy mixed veg, toasted sesame bread, and stellar seasoned sauce, with just a smidge of spice. €10 is a bit steep for a casual meal, but it’s a pretty solid döner.

Try: Fiöner
Schönfließer Str. 16 | Prenzlauer Berg | #casual #lunch #dinner

Anh Dao

Vietnamese restaurants in Berlin tend to be pretty plant-based friendly and there are a handful of great fully vegan Indochinese spots in Berlin. One of my favorites happens to be Anh Dao. The Pho Mango Curry is particularly memorable, but just about all of their noodle and curry dishes look very tasty! Next time I’ll be sure to also try one of their sushi rolls, the ‘crab’ roll looks particularly intriguing.

Try: Pho Mango Curry
Danziger Str. 42 | Prenzlauer Berg | #lunch #dinner #asian

Hum Vegan

This restaurant is a reliable spot for yummy Vietnamese food. You’ll find plenty of great classic curry and noodle dishes, plus harder-to-find dishes like Ca Bung (herbal eggplant soup) and Cha Ha Noi (tofu and mushrooms wrapped in seaweed served with vegetables and fragrant rice). The menu is long so you’re sure to find something interesting.

Try: #44 Ca Bung
Raumerstraße 38 | Prenzlauer Berg | #lunch #dinner #asian

Emira

Emira serves up my favorite vegan sushi in Berlin! With a dolled-up interior, thoughtfully presented dishes, a creative menu, and inviting staff, Emira sets itself up to be an all around 10/10 experience. Start off with a glass of their homemade iced tea (it’s not too sweet and just hits different here) and follow up with a few rolls. The best I’ve tried (so far!) is their Maki Tuna Avo, but I think it’s hard to go wrong here.

Try: Maki Tuna Avo
Schönhauser Allee 72A | Prenzlauer Berg | #lunch #dinner #datenight #asian

Greenfinch

Enjoy a delicious vegan brunch in a lovely environment. Their grilled cheese is satiating and rich, and their pancakes are just as good. Afterwards you can explore the beautiful and highly underrated micro-neighborhood Bötzowkiez.

Try: Grilled Cheese, ‘Feta’ Croissant
Käthe-Niederkirchner-Straße 10 | Prenzlauer Berg | #brunch #lunch #cafe

The Sanctuary

A classic Sicilian bakery with a twist: everything’s vegan! From the cream and pistachio filled maritozzi to the chocolate cornetti to the focaccia sprinkled with salsiccia: everything has an equally scrumptious plant-based alternative. They are in a small space so there’s just a handful of stools. If you want to linger a little longer you can always join in on one of their Sicilian kitchen plant-based workshops. The aim of their little bakery is to ‘bring traditional Italian artisanal baking a step forward.’

Try: Any Focaccia, Pistachio Maritozzo
Torstraße 175 | Mitte | #bakery #dessert #budget

Geh Veg

Geh Veg is an excellent spot for sweet and savory breakfasts, and they also absolutely kill it at the ice cream game! They focus on primarily fruity flavors, with a few creamier options like hazelnut. Some of their flavors are incredibly refreshing like their cucumber and lemon variations. I think they’re one of the best vegan spots on the west side, so if you’re in the area be sure to pop in for brunch and dessert.

Try: Savory Breakfast
Triftstraße 37 | Moabit | #brunch #lunch #dessert

Brammibal’s Donuts

These donuts are worth the hype! Brammibal’s is potentially Berlin’s most well known vegan establishment. With six locations within the city, creative marketing, unique recipes, and a cult following, they’re a must try for anyone with a sweet tooth. Be sure to try one of their classics and one of their seasonal specialties to really see what they have to offer. You can keep up with their offerings here. They also sell coffee and sometimes offer pop-up items like Oatly froyo.

Try: Maple Bacon, Peanut Butter Jelly, Any of their seasonal specialty donuts
Prenzlauer Berg | Friedrichshain | Kreuzkölln | Alexanderplatz | Potsdamer Platz | KaDeWe
#dessert #cafe #bakery

Tribeca

Tribeca offers a creative rotating menu of ice cream in the pretty micro-neighborhood Kollwitzkiez. They’ve since opened up a new spot in Kreuzberg. It seems like they’ve expanded their offerings since my last visit, now also selling ice cream cookie sandwiches, sundaes, and Spaghettieis. The latter which is a German creation - ice cream made to look like spaghetti with tomato sauce on it. Plus, a crumble of white chocolate to emulate Parm or a sprinkle of pistachio to act as basil. It’s a silly dish, but typically quite tasty and fun to eat. It’s also hard to find vegan, so there ya go! The Prenzlauer Berg location offers Spaghettieis, but I’m not sure if the Kreuzberg location does.

Try: Lemon Poppy Seed, Spaghettieis
Rykestraße 40 | Prenzlauer Berg
Graefestraße 9 | Kreuzberg

Swing Kitchen

Swing Kitchen is home to a variety of pleasant plant-based burgers. Their classic cheeseburger is a solid choice and will come with a few distinctive touches like lemon mayo and red cabbage. They’ve also got good dips! Their garlic aioli, basil lemon dip, and BBQ sauce will all pair well with your meal. Plus they’ve got a free refill station where you can sample a number of vibrant house drinks including elderberry soda, peach iced tea, cherry soda, and raspberry soda. Free refills are hard to come by in Berlin so it’s an extra cool touch!

Try: Vienna Burger
Georgenstraße 201 | Mitte | #lunch #dinner #casual

Secret Garden

I’d consider Secret Garden the OG vegan sushi spot in Berlin. The dishes are a little small for the price (kinda like some typical sushi) but they’re enjoyable nonetheless. My favorite roll I tried here is Golden Koi which consists of black rice, avocado, carrot lox, cucumber, butternut squash, and almond basil pesto. It makes for a fun mix of flavors!

Try: Golden Koi
Warschauer Straße 33 | Friedrichshain | #lunch #dinner #datenight #asian

Veg’d

With fluffy sesame buns and a few great patty choices, Veg’d is sure to scratch your burger itch. Pair it with their crispy fries and Guten Appetit! They’ve gotten a bit pricey in recent years, but the burgers still hit.

Try: Chili Cheeze
Prenzlauer Berg | Friedrichshain | Kreuzberg | Neukölln
#lunch #dinner #casual

Shisomen Vegan Ramen

Shisomen specializes in ramen and they do a great job at it! They offer classic choices like Tonkotsu and Tantan, as well as some more intriguing options like Green Cheese Ramen and Matcha Ramen. The Matcha Ramen is served with a plant-based version of fatty pork and gets great reviews so I might have to try that one next time! I can recommend their Duck Ramen, it’s very satisfying, complete with a rich broth, expertly prepared vegetables (cabbage, leek, cress), and scrummy plant-based duck.

Try: Duck Ramen
Gertrud-Kolmar-Straße 4 | Mitte | #lunch #dinner #asian

Matchasome

Matchasome may look like your typical Instagram friendly café, but they do not sacrifice taste for trendiness. Not only do they have a cute Y2K green and purple theme going on, but they also have fun matcha drinks made with your choice of oat, rice-coconut, almond, or soy milk. You’ll also find a few matcha-filled desserts here including cookies, brownies, protein balls, and soft serve. Their matcha brownie is a sweet treat, I’d recommend pairing it with an iced matcha prepared with rice coconut milk. I think this café used to have honey as a sweetener option, but they seem to be fully plant-based now.

Try: Matcha brownie
Torstraße 68 | Mitte | #cafe

Green Scoop

They’re Berlin’s best rated vegan ice cream shop for a reason! Visit when it’s warm and give their salty peanut butter, pistachio, or matcha flavors a try.

Try: Salty Peanut Butter
Boxhagener Straße 71 | Friedrichshain | #dessert

IV Restaurant

Moody lighting, velvet seating, and a dark color palette make this Vietnamese eatery perfect for a lush date night. Be sure to try a few appetizers: their mushroom scallops, duck wraps, and shrimp tacos are all so good. They really nail their plant-based meat ingredients, I fully believe that whoever prepares their soy and seitan deserves an award and pay raise. The entrees are pretty dang tasty, plus the portions are quite generous, and the prices are fair. Order their Sa Ot dish for a heaping serving of rice noodles, soy patties, tofu, and salad.

Try: Sa Ot
Immanuelkirchstraße 7 | Prenzlauer Berg | #lunch #dinner #datenight #asian

Radikalecher

This homey vegan café is a homey spot for bagels, waffles, scrambled tofu, porridge, and cakes. It’s such a sweet spot and the price-to-quality ratio is top notch. Prices are fair too.

Try: Scrambled Tofu, Omelette Bagel
Weserstraße 212 | Neukölln | #cafe #brunch #lunch

Plant Base

Plant Base is known for their creative, yet simplistic dishes like carrot lox on bagel and creamy tofu egg salad. Warm lighting and hanging plants makes this little Prenzlauer Allee café just dreamy. They also sell vegan kimchi!

Try: Savory breakfast
Prenzlauer Allee 208 | Prenzlauer Berg | #cafe #brunch #lunch

Ban Vegan

This restaurant gives off such a warm and friendly vibe, and their amiable staff just adds to that. Their food is full of comfort, heartiness, and flavor. They seem to take great care with their dishes and serve mostly Vietnamese plates, with a few fusion dishes. For fans of truffle (like myself) be sure to give their Madam B udon noodle dish a try.

Try: Madam B
Eisenacher Straße 54 | Schöneberg | #lunch #dinner #datenight #asian

Vedang

With soft fluffy brioche buns and savory burger sauce, this fully plant-based burger chain* sets you up for a tasty meal. They carry a few burger types featuring patties like Beyond meat, chick’n, falafel quinoa, and smokey soy. My favorite item of theirs is their döner wrap which is one of the best vegan döner wraps I’ve had in Berlin. The beyond meat cheeseburger is also amazing, but it’s for sure pricey for the portion. Finish off your meal with a side of fries topped with rich cheesy sauce.

*Their P-Berg location has started serving beef, but the other three spots should still be fully vegan.

Try: Döner Wrap

Vaust

For a fanciful date night complete with several courses, a homely setting, and some German fare, give Vaust a try. Their set menu can be ordered in three, four, or five courses, and starts at around €40, jumping €8 for each additional course. If you’re not as interested in their set menu, you can order from their regular menu which might offer items like Currywurst, marzipan sponge cake served with amaretto, and chickpea fries. It seems like sometimes they serve dishes like Käsespatzle as well. I have not yet visited this spot, but it’s been personally recommended to me a bunch so it’s very high on my list for a special occasion night out.

Pestalozzistraße 8 | Charlottenburg | #dinner #datenight

Froindlichst

Froindlichst is a decent spot. Throughout the week you can find creations like pizza topped with gyro, green olives, feta, and tzatziki. Their weekend brunch menu also serves dishes like a plant-based English breakfast spread and bread slices topped with vegan egg salad, white bean feta spread, carrot lox, and avocado. Although I wasn’t a huge fan of their brunch, their lunch/dinner and cakes are better. The best cake I tried here was the peanut caramel chocolate cake and the cheesecake also seems to be pretty popular as it was already sold out by ~13:00 one of the times I visited.

Try: Brettina Plate
Immanuelkirchstraße 31 | Prenzlauer Berg | #brunch #lunch #dinner #datenight

Sakura

Sakura focuses on using mainly seasonal, local, and organic ingredients. I’ve only had a takeout coffee from here, but it looks like a tranquil spot to enjoy a sweet treat. I’ve heard good things about their cheesecake!

Try: Cheesecake
Tieckstraße 8 | Mitte | #cafe #dessert #bakery

Iimori Vegan Ramen

Iimori is a top three ramen spot in the city for me, vegan or otherwise (although I have not made my way to Beyond Ramen yet). I’ve been a few times and think the Tonkotsu is the best thing on the menu, followed by their Duck Aburasoba. The Tonkotsu is bursting with a satisfying salty garlic flavor and the vegan beef patties that come with the dish are also very good. The Duck Aburasoba is absolutely delicious, so long as you’re okay with no broth. Their fried dumplings really complete the meal, they’re perfect if you appreciate a really crispy dumpling. It’s a smaller restaurant, and they don’t accept reservations, but you can aim to get there earlier or honestly just brave the wait. The Tonkotsu is worth it, trust me. I didn’t really like their basil ramen.

Try: Crispy Dumplings, Duck Aburasoba, Tonkotsu
Mulackstraße 29 | Mitte | #lunch #dinner #datenight #asian

Chimneys

Heard of Trdelník? Nicknamed chimney cakes, this sugary Hungarian pastry can be found at Chimneys in Berlin. They go past the classic sugar and spice rub, and offer chimney cakes with a wide variety of toppings, fillings, and dough. I’m not as big of a fan of their soft serve ice cream, and prefer their classic cakes that are served with just the toppings they’re rolled in.

Try: Classic Chimney Cake

Warschauer Str. 81 | Friedrichshain
Tauentzienstraße 21-24 (KaDeWe) | Charlottenburg

IRO Izakaya Vegan

This attractive eatery is a sweet place to enjoy all kinds of Japanese delicacies, including ramen, mochi, curry, and sushi. They also carry a few creative takes like edamame hummus and savory mochi. Their vibe is also relaxing, while still remaining rather polished. Their tantan ramen ended up being less interesting for me, but the appetizers are very tasty!

Simon-Dach-Straße 15 | Friedrichshain | #lunch #dinner #datenight #asian

Balaram

The first fully plant-based ice cream shop in Berlin had to of course make this list. Their plant-based variety is amazing, plus all their toppings are included in the price. Come earlier in the day to avoid long lines and flavor shortage because they can get quite popular, especially on hot days.

Try: Crazy Peanut

Vegan & Vegetarian:

Delabuu

Delabuu serves up truly delish rolled ice cream, which you can compliment by adding in a number of mix-ins that will undoubtedly amplify your ice cream experience. You can pick from one of their ice cream combos or design your own for a fully customized treat. All of their ice cream is vegan, although not all of their mix-ins are, but the vegan ones are clearly labeled.

Try: Peanut Booster, Design your own mix in!

Tauentzienstraße 21-24 (KaDeWe) | Charlottenburg
Alte Potsdamer Straße 7 (The Playce) | Mitte

Tutti Island

I have become a big Tutti Island fan, ever since my friend Laura hooked me on their Sudanese delicacies. Nearly all of their dishes are vegan (basically everything that doesn’t include halloumi, but don’t quote me on that), including their Luqaimat dessert, which are fried plant-based donuts sweetened with date syrup and topped with sesame seeds. So good! Also be sure to ask for aubergine spread and peanut sauce, it’s essential.

Try: Falafel in Pita, Luqaimat
Zossener Straße 17 | Kreuzberg | #casual #lunch #dinner #budget

The Greens

The Greens is a cool vegetarian (from what I’ve seen 90% vegan) café located on a secluded street in the central district. Come here for relaxed vibes paired with lots plants. The only setback is that what they have available that day can be kind of all over the place. I’d recommend arriving earlier in the day (before ~13:00) to get your pick of the daily offerings or else you’ll find mostly cake and coffee. Every plant-based treat I’ve had here has been delicious, but my favorites have been their cashew cheese and greens croissant, their tofu mozzarella and tomato croissant, and their lemon rosemary cookie.

Plus if you’re looking for a place to get a little work done, they’re also an excellent laptop-friendly café in Berlin.

Brocca Café

This warm and bright café is nestled at the corner of a charming cross street in Prenzlauer Berg. You’ll find plenty of vegan options including a variety of cakes, bagels, and granola plates. Their cashew cheese and veggie bagel hit the spot, and I’d like to try the carrot lox one on another visit. I also like their veggie and glass noodle bao bun. Prices are very fair.

Caphe Hoa

Caphe Hoa is a nice place to enjoy good Vietnamese home cooking in a sweet environment for an affordable price. You can get most of their mains in a smaller portion as well, in case you’re less hungry or want to save a few euros. Their dishes are both satiating and fresh, and my go to place for a cozy healthy meal. You really can’t go wrong ordering their sticky rice and glass noodle dishes. I always have a nice time here, it’s one of my favorite Vietnamese spots in town (and there are plenty of Vietnamese spots in Berlin to pick from).

Their menu is mostly vegan and clearly indicated if not. I’ve only visited their Mitte location, but from what I’ve seen their Kreuzberg location is very similar. In the warmer months be sure to try their coconut iced coffee which is frothy, sweet, and truly one of my favorite iced coffees in town. Prices are fair.

Hari Moksh

This Kreuzberg restaurant serves zesty Indian food and features a fully vegetarian menu. If I recall correctly, around half their menu is fully vegan, and to my understanding they’re more authentic and a tad more affordable than most Indian places in Berlin. The Palak Tofu and Palak Tofu are safe bets.

Bonvivant

Bonvivant is an all around delightful spot to enjoy fanciful brunch in Berlin. They’re the first Michelin star brunch restaurant in Berlin (that alone makes them worth the visit) and they’re a fully vegetarian eatery, so of course there’s a couple nice vegan options to choose from. The Zen Master’s Breakfast Bowl is incredible: the flavors are rich and layered, plus the Green Shakshuka is expertly textured, with a brilliant balance of soft spinach and peas, and uber crispy potatoes. Just delicious! They’re also known for their cocktails and have creative dinner options too. Most plates are around €14 to €20 which is expensive for Berlin, but pretty good for Michelin eateries.

Try: Zen Master’s Breakfast Bowl, Green Shakshuka

Doughnut Time

These donuts are on the pricier side, but they’re fun and fresh, and their shop has plenty of vegan options (I’d say the majority of their pastries are vegan). I’ve tried quite a few at this point so it’s hard to narrow down my favorite picks, but I can say apple cheesecake and raspberry cheesecake are very high up there for me. The apple filling is a nice mix of sweet and sour, plus the swirly frosting on the top really brings the whole donut together. As for the raspberry cheesecake, the filling is tart and fresh, and beautifully encased in a classic powdered donut. Their oreo donut gets an honorable mention too. Yum!

All of these donuts are vegan!

Lucy’s

Lucy’s has two sweet health food cafés in Mitte, just down the street from one another. I’ve only been to the Torstraße location, but I had a good time trying their ‘pick three’ salad dish. You can also just pick one salad as a side if you’re less hungry. They have rotating daily options for this particular dish so you can try an array of fantastic combos depending on when you visit. If they happen to have their potato tahini salad on offer when you visit be sure to try that one! Typically all their salads are vegan, but you have the option of adding vegetarian toppings like feta. You’ll also find smoothies, juices, mixed veggie toasts, proper brunch, and more. Their dressed banana bread is a nourishing choice, although it does taste a bit healthy, if you know what I mean.

Blumental

For a feel good breakfast in a modern space look no further than Blumental. They’re a plant-forward brunch spot bordering Kreuzberg home to tasty cakes and excellent healthy dishes packed with seasonal produce and flavor. This eatery is fully vegetarian and all their mains are plant-based, with the option of adding egg to some of their dishes. Most of the desserts are vegan, including all of their cakes. Their staff is super friendly too so you’ll feel right at home. Be sure to take a peek at their composting machine ‘Berta’ in the back of the restaurant which takes care of all their organic waste.

Ryong

At Ryong you can find a mix of Asian tapas, noodle dishes, and unique fusion burger creations. If you want a burger that heavily strays from tradition, but still just manages to stay within core burger guidelines (bun and patty) then you’re in for a treat at Ryong. Each burger comes with a tofu or eggplant filling, your choice of peanut or soy marinade, a mix of sauces and vegetables, and a colorful bao bun. They’re served with a side of edamame.

Calm Coffee

Calm Coffee has quite a few vegan pastries and drinks, and they’ve also since jumped into the cinnamon roll market with rotating flavors including peanut butter, blueberry, salted caramel, raspberry, matcha, and birthday cake. They take their seasonal drinks seriously and I particularly like their matcha rose latte and London fog. Their raspberry cinnamon roll is the best roll I’ve tried so far, so definitely give it a try if it’s available if/when you visit.

Kanaan

Any of Kanaan’s hummus plates are superb! Be sure to order their Bread & Dips platter. When I last visited for brunch the menu was completely meat and dairy free, with a handful of dishes served with a poached egg that can be left out on request. They specifically state that all their dishes can be made vegan! I’d recommend ordering a few dishes and sharing all of them with your group so you can try a little bit of everything.

Rosa Parks Cafe

This unassuming neighborhood café is home to some seriously stellar food. Their mushroom vegan quiche is amazing from the homemade buttery crust to the bountiful sauteed mushrooms. The raspberry cheesecake was also impressive, not too sweet and pleasantly tart. The owner is also very friendly! They seem to be fully vegetarian and mostly vegan. If I recall, not all the cakes and baked goods are clearly labeled as vegan, so be sure to clarify that before ordering so you can consider all your options.

Cinnamood

Cinnamood is home to some excellent vegan cinnamon rolls in Berlin. Their rolls are soft and chewy, packed with flavor, and have just the right amount of sweetness. Their reviews are a bit mixed so perhaps not every roll is a hit (or perhaps it’s because they’re pricier), but I can honestly say I’m a fan and enjoyed the blueberry and raspberry rolls.

Try: Blueberry Vegan Roll, Raspberry Vegan Roll

Momo’s Organic Dumplings

Six variations of vegan dumplings and three vegan sauces are offered here! You can choose to get them steamed or pan fried. I’m sure they’re all good and I quite liked everything I tried which included their chickpea, seitan, aubergine dumplings.

Try: Cheeky Chickpea, Spicy Seitan, Aubergenius

Sammy’s Berliner Donuts

Sammy’s is a creative donut shop with excellent vegan options. So far I’ve only tried their lotus biscoff (and really liked it), and it’ll be hard to decide which donut to try next, but it’ll probably be either strawberry pistachio, banana split, or café latte. They also have more classic donuts available like pink sprinkles and glazed filled with jam. Also vegan, of course.

Duo

This Sicilian ice cream shop has become crazy popular over the years, their Kreuzberg location tends to consistently have a line on sunny days. Although I think they could still expand their plant-based flavors much more, the vegan flavors they do offer are really tasty and thoughtfully made. I recommend getting a double scoop of Hazelnut and Shalia (chocolate, fig, almond). Their gluten free and sugar free flavors are also clearly labeled.

Great Vegan Options:

Aera

Aera serves up the best vegan grilled cheese I’ve ever had. Their cheese emulates cheddar, and the flavor profile is very layered, I felt like I was noticing something new with each bite. It’s a fantastic grilled cheese, regardless of being vegan or not. It’s a bit heavy though, so come hungry and be ready to take a nice walk around Rosenthaler afterwards if you want to avoid conking out after this hearty and indulgent meal.

The grilled cheese is served topped with herbs including fresh rosemary, and the bread used is sourdough and gluten free. The whole café is gluten free, in fact. If you have a little extra room they also have a seasonal vegan galette that’s really nice. The one we tried was topped with pear.

Rocket + Basil

I’m a fan of SO MUCH here! Their tahini carrot sandwich and herbaceous kale carrot plate are just delicious. Their fresh and quality ingredients really make for a heartwarming meal, best shared among friends. It’s a must visit and potentially in my top three favorite brunch spots in Berlin. And I know a thing or two about brunch in Berlin. They unfortunately only serve proper brunch on the weekends, but on the weekdays they’re open for limited hours selling sandwiches and some baked goods. On weekdays you can order these dishes beforehand online or get there early to get a better selection, since they typically sell out.

Zora

Although Zora Supermarket sells meat products, their quick food station at the front of the store sells fully vegetarian dishes, with most items being fully plant-based. On weekdays you’ll just find chickpea and vegetable samosas with chutney, but on weekends you have the choice of classic samosas, samosa chaat, chai, pani puri, and more. Prices are very reasonable too, I’d say they have the thriftiest samosas I’ve found in Berlin, plus they’re some of the heartiest and best you’ll find in this city. You can get one samosa for €1.70, with prices slightly decreasing with each additional samosa purchase; this caps out at ten samosas for €14, or €1.40 per samosa. They’re available until they sell out, so I’d visit by lunchtime to secure some samosas. I’ve only visited their Kreuzberg location, but they also have a Friedrichshain location which from what I can see operates similarly.

ÉTÉ

ÉTÉ is an Asian fusion restaurant packed with moreish and flavor-filled dishes. I was especially impressed by their Korean inspired dishes including their Gimbap (similar to sushi), Tofu bibimbap (rice, vegetables, and Korean spices), and Jjajangmyeon (noodles made with black bean paste). They were all deeply flavorful and nice to pair with one of their creative sweet drinks. I also have to say their main dishes are quite filling! FYI, just over half their menu is fully vegan.

Home of Dumplings

Home of Dumplings is a dumpling spot in Kreuzberg with some deeply tasty dishes. Although they typically only have one or two vegan dumpling options, the options they do have have are pretty dang good. In fact mixed vegetable (part of the permanent menu) is my favorite dumpling they offer here. Nearly all of their side dishes are vegan, my favorites (out of the ones I’ve tried so far) being their mushroom tempura, kimchi, warm noodles, and chili oil tofu. The only one I haven’t liked as much is their eggplant, which was just kind of meh.

Try: Vegetable Dumplings (pan fried or steamed), chili tofu, mushroom tempura

Simply

Simply Café is a fantastic spot for fusion dishes, friendly service, creative drinks, tasty dessert, and all around lovely ambiance. All of their drinks can be made vegan or already come vegan, and their seasonal lattes like their Gingerbread Latte and Tiramisu Latte are particularly nice treats. You should be able to find their Dalgona Latte year round (yum) and for a milky fruity option try their oat milk specials — their cherry and raspberry versions are really nice and made with in-house made jam. Be sure to ask which desserts they have available when you visit; all of their crepe cakes are great, but they’re typically just dairy free, not fully vegan. Their tapioca pudding is fully vegan and delish! For mains I’d recommend trying their cheesy Schnitzel and mushroom nori pasta. Some of their dishes can be pricier for the portion, but the quality stands strong.

Coco Cup

Heard of chè? It’s a Vietnamese dessert that can be served in soup, pudding, or beverage form. It’s sweet, gelatinous, and served over ice, making it an excellent summertime treat. After choosing your base (either chè or tea) head on over to their toppings bar where you can add in your choice of toppings. It’s hard to go wrong here, so I’m sure your end result will be delicious (so long as you skip the durian)! The entire toppings bar is conveniently vegan, as is the chè. Coco Cup is also home to Vietnamese dishes like bánh mì and other forms of Viet street food, but those vegan options are not quite as plentiful.

Ni’s

Ni’s is a trendy noodles spot with a nice variety of plant-based options. Their noodles are made in house so I highly recommend trying one of those dishes. The peanut noodles are simple, but so satisfying — quality noodles, crunchy fresh vegetables, fresh herbs, some chili oil and spice, and a nice peanut sauce. Their meter long noodles are also a great bet, they’re so chewy and some of the best the city has to offer in my opinion. Be sure to also start your meal with an order of their crispy fried basil and chili tofu (I think it might be called salt and pepper tofu on the menu), this dish is perhaps my favorite one here. All three of these dishes are pictured below.

Han West Dumplings

At all of their locations you can find vegan box specials which include fries, a bao bun, and six dumplings for €12. Always a nice meal, they cook their crunchy tofu so well. I’ve only tried their Fu Bao (which I remember really enjoying), but since I’ve last visited it looks like they’ve also added a mushroom and vegan fried chicken bao bun. You can also order these items individually. Their Kreuzberg location has also teamed up with ShuShu Chinese BBQ to offer vegan chicken bites, mapo tofu, and shu shu aubergine.

Wu Kong

At Wu Kong you’ve got to try the crispy tofu bites and aubergine appetizer. The aubergine is what dreams are made of — the texture is fantastic, chewy and crispy in all the right ways. The tofu is also a texture dream, complimented with a sticky sweet sesame sauce. Delish! The first page of their menu features all of their plant-based appetizers, and every one of their mains can be made plant-based by opting for tofu as the protein.

Neni

For a fancier brunch (or lunch…or din!) head on over to Neni, a swanky rooftop eatery, complete with a stunning view of Berlin’s Zoo (head on over sometime April to mid-November for an especially lush view, it gets a little barren in wintertime). The food is pretty good, and yes the prices are high, but for the vibes it’s worth the special occasion splurge. To really treat yourself to a Mediterranean meal fit for kings, go for the mezze trio, hummus trio/plate, and oyster mushroom shawarma. Pop on over down the hall to Monkey Bar afterwards for a cheeky cocktail.

Try: Mezze Trio

Ketels Curry

This stand serves up some tasty Currywurst and Bratwurst, and offers a mix of plant-based and meaty options. What I like about them is they have a few vegan sauces and sides so you’re not stuck with just ketchup! They’re one of the only places I’ve found that serves vegan Bratwurst im Brötchen (in a bread roll) and at just €3.80 it works out to be a pretty thrifty snack. When I visited I was recommended to add Sauerkraut because “the vegan sausage is dry,” but I disagree, it was crispy on the outside and reasonably soft/moist within, very comparable to their non-vegan sausage. However, get the Sauerkraut anyway — and add vegan aioli, green onion, and fried onions while you’re at it. Their Currywurst is also nice, try it with ketchup, hot sauce, and mayo.

Tsu Tsu

Tsu Tsu offers Japanese-style karage fried chicken. Their vegan version is made by deep frying soy bites and then marinating them in soy sauce, sake, ginger, and garlic. They’re served with lemon wedges and pickled radish, plus a side and sauce of your choice. They have some interesting sides including Japanese potato salad and Onigiri rice balls. I really liked the food on my first visit, but last time the soy bites left me feeling underwhelmed. I think I’d still give them one more try to fully form my opinion. You be the judge!

Möllers Köttbullar

Möllers serves Swedish Köttbullar in both classic and plant-based variations. Their meatballs are made out of pea protein and you can get all the classic sides and sauces in a vegan version including vegan mayo, vegan gravy, and dairy free mashed potatoes. With my plant-based plate I got to enjoy a serving of fries, pea protein balls, cucumber salad, organic cranberries, gravy, ketchup, and mayo. It was quite tasty and had such a satisfying mix of flavors, textures, acidity, and crunch. Plates vary in cost from around €7 to €15, but the general portion size remains the same, the only item that you can get a noticeably higher serving of are the Köttbullar / No Beef Bullar.

Stadtsalat

If you want a nourishing and hearty bowl of grains, salad, vegetables, and protein with awesome flavor and seasoning then Stadtsalat is your place! It’s not a thrifty meal (most of their bowls are €12 to €16), but it sure is a pleasant one. I’ve tried the Vegan Indian Summer and Mexican Taco bowls, and liked them to the point that I ended up recreating them at home. Many of their bowls are seasonal, and they usually have around ten plant-based bowls and salads to pick from. Keep up with their evolving menu here.

Umami

This Indochinese restaurant is quite popular in Berlin for both omnivores and plant-based eaters. Their menu is perfectly split down the center with half their offerings being plant-based, and the other half not. Their seitan is really flavorful so be sure to get a dish including that. Not every item here is a hit, but I think the perfect order is a #23 with seitan paired with a Coriander Mule for a drink. I like the F-Hain location the most, probably due to the nostalgia I have from visiting here with so many different loved ones.

Scheers Schnitzel

If you’re looking to try vegan German (or German-Austrian) food while in town, Scheers is a great choice! They offer vegan versions of their Schnitzel which (yes, may look like hockey pucks and) are downright tasty. The flavor is quite similar to proper Schnitzel and the Schniposa plate is naturally vegan so long as you ask for a vegan version, which is free of charge. The meaty version is authentic too so if you’re visiting with a mixed diet group. The Schniposa plate comes with salad and fries so you’re in for a filling meal at for under €8. Be sure to ask for a few of their sauces when you order, their curry and chili sauces are both homemade, plant-based, and complimentary. They add really nice flavor to the Schnitzel plate.
