Berlin Brunch Guide: 7 Places You Can’t Miss

Last updated: February 3, 2023

Berlin hopped on the brunch bandwagon later than most Western European capital cities, but they’ve quickly made up for lost time with offerings of boozy brunches, and long and lazy breakfasts. Whether it’s the third wave coffee scene in Kreuzberg that’s calling your name or you’re looking for a quality eggs benny with a view of the Spree: you’ve come to the right place. In no particular order, here are seven classic brunch spots to visit in Berlin.

Kanaan

We’re starting off strong here. Hummus for breakfast? Yes please! This restaurant combines Israeli and Palestinian kitchens and creates a space perfect for everyone, especially hummus lovers and fans of Middle Eastern cuisine. The decor is brightly colored, and this eatery is located in one of the hippest areas of P’Berg.

My top recs: the Palestinian hummus, the Kanaan falafel, the breads & dips plate (this one’s a must), and the Kanaan salad.

Bonus: Any brunch dish can be veganized (and like 90% of the menu is already plant-based). They claim to have the best hummus in Berlin, so you’ll have to try it for yourself.

Nah am Wasser

This East-side spot has a lot of heart. Try one of their breakfast platters for a nourishing meal and don’t forget to save room for a pastry or two. At their Neukölln location you can also sit at tables by the water outside, and take a charming tree-lined walk along the canal after your meal.

21 Gramm

21 Gramm is a bewitching cafe built into a former chapel, which was mainly used for funeral services in the past. The name 21 Gramm is in reference to an old study that showed that humans on average lose 21 grams after death, and this is viewed as the weight of one’s soul leaving their body after passing. To pay respect to those who came through the chapel, the owner named their café after this concept.

Nowadays the classic style of the chapel mixes well with the new contemporary manner, and their unique, yet welcoming setting is sure to win you over. The food is of course delicious, and you can’t go wrong with their buttermilk pancakes, which are made with an apple and rose compote, crème fraîche, basil, salted pumpkin seeds, and cardamom syrup.

The Visit Coffee Roastery

This beaming cafe is minimalist and modern with plenty of photo ops, and shines bright in a little alley off Kottbusser Tor. With passionate people, high-quality beans, and excellent roasting practices, you’re in for a real treat with any kind of caffeine fix you get here. There’s lots of nice food to try, my favorites being their egg drop and poppy seed cake.

Plus you can enjoy all day brunch, and this is one of my favorite places to also get some work done on my laptop. Definitely go to the Adalberstraße location, it’s the best one! They also have three other locations around Berlin, but they’re not roasteries.

Adalbertstraße 9 | Kreuzberg

Café KRONE

This is hands down one of the coziest places in Berlin. Everything is so tasty here and the staff is really warm and friendly! I really mean it when I say everything is great here, but The G.O.A.T. egg dish and any of the pancakes really take the cake.

Roamers

This cute little spot has a West Coast USA meets eclectic Berlin kind of vibe. With their farmhouse charm and many hanging plants, Roamers manages to feel hipster and homely at once, making it a cool spot that is guaranteed to make you feel welcomed. If you’re into anything egg or avocado related you’re in luck! Treat yourself to a Lonesome Sailor plate or avocado toast for rich flavors.

Honestly this place is no longer a hidden gem, and is typically quite popular on weekends, but take a day to get there a little early and be rewarded with a lovely visit. In their cafe there’s the quote, “You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry, don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way,” which basically encompasses the general pleasantry of Roamers.

Pannierstraße 64 | Neukölln

19grams

Not to be confused with 21 Gramm, which was featured earlier on this list. Founded in 2002, this sweet OG specialty coffee and brunch spot is an excellent place to get your day started. I’ve only tried their Reuben Sandwich and a flat white so far, and I was more than satisfied. Their Reuben was expertly paired with crunchy housemade carrot sourdough, Swiss Gruyère cheese, remoulade, pickle, and sauerkraut. Their Bubble and Squeak Benedict also looked absolutely delicious. They also accept reservations!

I’ve only visited their Neukölln location, but they have a few locations throughout Berlin.

Boxhagener Str. 74 | Friedrichshain
Karl-Liebknecht-Str. 13 | Mitte (Alex)
