Rocket + Basil

This stellar spot has been popular since they first opened their doors. Now that their lines are much shorter (although you’ll still have to get there early to avoid waiting on weekends) we can all enjoy their Middle Eastern and traditional Western brunch fusion which includes rotating goodies like their pistachio rosewater cake and flaky sausage roll. Their interior is also really pretty, and it’s just overall a very lovely spot, although a bit on the smaller side. However, seating doubles in the warmer months with their outdoor tables.

I’m a fan of SO MUCH here! Their fried potatoes served with egg, greens, vegetables, herbs, and Greek yogurt are superb. Their coffee is also strong and well-made, I especially like their flat whites. Their sausage roll with tomato sauce is drool worthy. Their tahini carrot sandwich and herbaceous kale carrot plate are also so good. Their fresh and quality ingredients really make for a heartwarming meal, best shared among friends. The only thing I wouldn’t recommend is their cheese sandwich which was just too heavy and oily for me. It’s a must visit! They unfortunately only serve proper brunch on the weekends, but on the weekdays they’re open for limited hours selling sandwiches and some baked goods. On weekdays you can order these dishes beforehand online or get there early to get a better selection, since they typically sell out.

Father Carpenter

Father Carpenter is one of my favorite brunch spots in the neighborhood. I just think their courtyard is so pretty and picturesque, and simply being present here puts me in good spirits. During the summer their rosemary spritz and iced chai are both super nice choices, and their house Egg Benedict is equally as tasty! They’re honestly too pricey for me to regularly visit, but I’ve had a great experience with each encounter.

The Rabbit Café

This café also has not one, but TWO adorable resident Shiba Inus, and quite frankly that’s enough of a reason to visit. If for some reason that’s not enough they also serve a truly incredible egg drop sandwich. It’s served on super thick and buttery brioche so it’s worth it to fork-and-knife it. The base price is €6 and you can also add on sausage, bacon, or Bulgogi for €1 - €2 extra. Add the beef, you won’t regret it, it’s a great bang for your buck either way.

Sunday Brunch at Hotel Grenzfall

Dreaming of a buffet Sunday brunch? Look no further than Hotel Grenzfall! Conveniently located just steps from the Berlin Wall Memorial, perfect if you want to pair a bit of historical sightseeing with an indulgent breakfast. Every first and third Sunday of the month they offer a decadent brunch served in their bright and airy dining room. The brunch costs €29 per person, but children up to the age of 14 only pay their age. Along with unlimited brunch, you’ll also get water, juice, and tea, along with one welcome drink and coffee drink, which you can order from your table.

On my recent visit, I opted for a cappuccino and glass of champagne. You can find the buffet brunch in two rooms. The first room has typical German hotel breakfast offerings like eggs, sausage, sliced cheese, sliced meat, fruit, müsli, fresh vegetables, and yogurt. The second room has a wide array of choices; on my visit I found schnitzel, crêpe, shaksuhka, meatballs, pasta salad, creamy chicken, stewed beef, potato gratin, chicken drumsticks, falafel, pasta salad, tarts, cake, croissants, and more. Yum! They cook all their food in smaller batches to avoid waste, but have a sign indicating they’re willing to prepare more of anything, and just to let them know if something is out. The food was delicious and afterwards you can go explore the hotel’s tranquil backyard, complete with lovely gardens, a pond, and lounging areas.

19grams

Founded in 2002, this sweet OG specialty coffee and brunch spot is an excellent place to get your day started. I’ve only tried a Reuben Sandwich and flat white so far, and I was more than satisfied. Their Reuben was expertly paired with crunchy housemade carrot sourdough, Swiss Gruyère cheese, remoulade, pickle, and sauerkraut. Their Bubble and Squeak Benedict also looked absolutely delicious. They also accept reservations!

Puffle Bees

Puffle Bees specializes in croffles, which I believe is croissant dough cooked in a waffle iron. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and absolutely fantastic all around. There’s around twenty variations to choose from, and I absolutely loved their peanut butter and banana version which included salted whipped peanut butter, grilled bananas, and candied nuts. They also sell egg drop sandwiches! We tried both their Bulgogi Beef and Scampi sandwiches and they were so tasty, and I really want to try their avocado and chicken versions next time. You’ve just got to try it all for yourself! Paired with a Lavender Latte, I was in heaven!

SOFI

This new wave bakery is located inside a charming and quiet courtyard in the center of Mitte. The inside is cozy and minimalist with an open kitchen, whereas the outside is airy and peaceful. You’ll encounter a nice mix of loaves, pastries, sandwiches, plates, and cakes. Their bread is thick and light on the inside, and crispy and chewy on the outside. Their morning plate is a nice start to the day and comes with sliced bread, whipped butter, soft boiled egg, sliced cheese, and an (unnecessarily) generous helping of flaky salt. They also have rotating specials including a leek and kimchi grilled cheese that I’ve been eager to try.

Café de Luna

Café de Luna is a cute spot to enjoy decadent drinks (their rose blue latte is my favorite), scrumptious egg drop sandwiches (the bulgogi variation is nice and yes there are a lot of places to get egg drops in Mitte), and yummy cakes (vegan matcha crepe cake for the WIN!). The seating is limited (although there are more seating options downstairs) and it’s a tad pricey, but it’s overall a really nice treat and brunch spot.

Aera

Plant-based and gluten free peeps: listen up! Aera is a fully gluten free bakery with plenty of great plant-based choices. What stands out most to me is their vegan grilled cheese, which is easily one of the best vegan sandwiches I’ve ever had. They also serve a classic grilled cheese that I’m sure is also tasty. Plus, their galettes are so good! Their interior is gorgeous too, with minimalist decor framed by walls painted in a vibrant royal blue color.

Blumental

For a feel good breakfast in a modern space look no further than Blumental. They’re a plant-forward brunch spot bordering Kreuzberg home to tasty vegan cakes and excellent healthy dishes packed with seasonal produce and flavor. Their staff is super friendly too so you’ll feel right at home. Be sure to take a peek at their composting machine ‘Berta’ in the back of the restaurant which takes care of all their organic waste.

Distrikt Coffee

Distrikt Coffee is a solid classic Berlin brunch spot. The interior walls are painted a soft peach and lined with brick, and light trickles in from their broad windows on a clear day. Modern and lush, and quite popular among brunch connoisseurs in the city. . . I would say it’s worth the hype. Their French toast is rich, but maybe a little too sweet for me. Their Spicy Ragu on the other hand was practiclly perfect. Paired with sourdough toast, Italian sausage, chickpeas, Parmesan, and a poached egg, making for a really tasty mix of flavors. My only (ever so slight) complaint is their liberal use of the word spicy. . . flavorful yes, but spicy? Not even for Berlin standards.

Try: Spicy* Ragu on Sourdough Toast
Bergstraße 68 | €€

*This is just me being extra, I don’t mind that they call their dish spicy.

Zeit für Brot

Although Zeit für Brot didn’t start in Berlin, they grew to be quite popular here. They use no additives, are sourdough focused, and create high quality freshly baked bread. One of their most popular items are their cinnamon rolls, but I typically go for an egg sandwich or cardamom bun. The time and day of week you visit can greatly vary what they have available, but there’s always enough for a casual meal or brekkie of baked goods. They have two locations in Mitte (I prefer the Alte Schönhauser one between the two) and a few other locations in Berlin and around Germany.

Baffel’s

I stumbled upon this humble little cafe after Distrikt Coffee’s queue was too long one day, and I’m so glad I did. I enjoyed a bagel topped with greens, cream cheese, egg, and Italian seasoning. The caramel macchiato and carrot cake really hit the spot, and next time I think I’ll try a waffle too.

Frea

This bakery is zero-waste, locally-sourced, and fully plant-based. Their food scraps are composted and turned into fertilizer that is then returned to their local suppliers. I’ve tried just two pastries here and liked them both very much. Their Spandauer with vanilla crème is especially amazing, and their poppy seed and marzipan twist is perfect if you don’t like overly sweet pastries. I'm hope to revisit soon to try their cardamom bun. Their house breakfast is also great and although the price is notably steeper than the rest of their items, at €20, it’s a big enough portion that you can easily split it between two people. The dish includes croissants, brioche, brötchen, butter, spreads, fresh and cooked vegetables, plus hummus.

Gartenstraße 9 | €-€€

Avocado Club

The perfect place for avocado lovers: nearly every dish and even some of their drinks incorporate avocado. 🥑 It’s also a nice spot if you’re craving a healthier brunch since they offer smoothie bowls and plenty of vegetable-based dishes, plus salads become available after noon. I really enjoyed and recommend their avocado coffee, but the consistency is thicker and chunky even when mixed, so I wouldn’t recommend it to people who have texture sensitivities.

Still On My List:

House of Small Wonder

House of Small Wonder is a Japanese fusion brunch restaurant. Most dishes have just a touch of Japanese inspiration like their Eggs Benedict with wasabi hollandaise sauce. Still on my list!

Johannisstraße 20

The Reed

Although I hear the food here is delish, the top reason to visit is the atmosphere, which has an interesting art-deco style that makes you feel like you’re in the center of an art gallery. I believe on Saturdays and Sundays they only offer their €25 set brunch from 10:00-16:00, but the other days regular breakfast is offered. The reviews are great!

Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 13

Factory Girl

I have not yet made it to this popular Mitte spot, mainly because just about every time I pass by there’s a line of people waiting to be sat. I would say coming past brunch hours or on a weekday is your best bet because they’re currently not offering reservations. This café caters to healthy eaters, is fully vegetarian (with a few creative vegan dishes), and especially for you if you’re a fan of egg-based breakfast dishes.

Auguststraße 29c

Beste Bagel

This new bagel spot prides itself in NY style bagels! I’d like to give them a try, I’m always down for a bagel sandwich.

Potsdamer Straße 68

Café Odor

This eatery looks like it has a beautiful interior and tasty food. Looking forward to giving it a try!
